Artificial Traffic Snarls in Chennai

Artificial Traffic Snarls in Chennai

These days I see that important places like Velachery Vijayanagar, Camp Road (Selayur), Saidapet, T. Nagar seems to be reeling under acute traffic congestions. We admit that Chennai City Traffic Police  are doing their best to regulate and ensure a free flow of traffic in the city and its suburbs. But there are a few things that I witness frequently and which have been remaining unanswered. I just thought I would share the same with other readers so that it would be an eye-opener for everyone commuting in the city of Chennai.

  1. When there is a slight downpour and after it stops there is a great commotion all over. People do rampant redlight jumps throwing indiscipline unleashed and safety to the air. I believe four wheelers should ensure unabated by rains etc because they are not personally disturbed by the rains because they have wipers and and other latest gadgets to protect them from getting wet. This attitude to save a little traffic.
  2. After the rains and during inclement conditions, the police patrol and traffic sergeants seems to be mysteriously missing. This also compounds to the issue outline in (1).
  3. In important junctions like Velachery and particularly between stretches like MRTS to Vijayanagar terminus there are clear lanes earmarked eventhough the road is small. There are traffic lights too to stop and regulate the traffic. I even see a few cops manning the junction. Nevertheless the traffic condition is crazy here. This might be because of the undue patronage extended by the traffic cops to the autos who 'grease their palms illegally' almost on a daily basis. This occurs even when closed circuit cameras have been instituted in this important junction. I have personally reported this in CCTP website but there hasn't been any improvement whatsoever.

We even doubt the attitude of CCTP staff is shoo-shooing away MTC drivers but showing a 'kind-hearted' gesture to autos because of these 'patronage' from them in that they (CCTP) is trying to cultivate some sort of animosity in the minds of commuters towards public transporation so that a good chunk of them would favor of autos and private transportation and during that occasion they can rise more chargesheets on them for offences of different kinds thus augmenting their revenue through books and also that comes in illegally into the cops' pockets.

Chennai roads have been good to commute once upon a time. Because of mismanagement by authorities and callousness of cops one is really getting pissed off like anything. This even makes me thing whether the entity like 'M Shakeel Akther', who claims himself as Joint Traffic Commissioner of Police in CCTP is really a live figure or just another hallucinatory fictious character proposed by CCTP. Unless CCTP makes some earnest endeavor to improve and decongest the Chennai Traffic, I don't think their image is going to improve amongst the public even an iota. As commuters to workaround the melee, we would need to plan our trips/travels well in advance so that our schedules are met without any delays.

Futuristic Schools on Velachery Tambaram Highway

Futuristic Schools on Velachery Tambaram Highway

I have been observing at least two important educational institutions in the Velachery Tambaram Road that have been proving and demonstrating themselves as futuristic in more ways than one. They are:

  1. Boaz School (near Gowrivakkam, Tambaram) [CBSE]
  2. Sri Ganesan Matriculation Higher Secondary School (Velachery Vijayanagar)

The latter also seems to be having its own website like http://www.sriganesan.ac.in/ as indicated in their board but I could not visit the website. I just thought I would share these with other readers so that if you are looking out for some good schools in this area, you can get to one here.

A quick trip through Velachery Tambaram highway demonstrating the migration of small industries to big apartments

A quick trip through Velachery Tambaram highway demonstrating the migration of small industries to big apartments

If you had been commuting through the Velachery Tambaram highway (known as Marmalong Irumbuliyoor Highway in the State Gazette) besides being designated as State Highway 48 (SH48), you can witness a steep amount of sky scraper apartments that is coming up all over here. At least in a very small stretch from Narayanapuram to Pallikaranai Oil Mill, one can witness three old industries that have disappeared and the properties now being put up with a board of residential apartment promoters who seemed to have purchased those areas for constructing sky scraper apartments.

The famous OilMill seems to have been taken over by NatWest Constructions towards constructing 2/3 BHK duplex apartments. The carborundum factory and other one seems to be taken over by Appaswamy Real Estate. Whilst we welcome that there is a move towards more residential properties, there are other things to be pondered over:

  • Undue burden on the water table in the area
  • Free flow of air is hampered by too much of high-rise buildings in a small stretch.

Would CMDA  plan something out for the long run like for twenty thirty years instead of just for five years when the current government is going to rule in an avaricious attempt to make fast bucks?

Mounting Pile of Bus Tickets -- InsurmountableConfusions and Challenge to the Environment

Mounting Pile of Bus Tickets -- InsurmountableConfusions and Challenge to the Environment

If you are frequently changing buses in India for a journey and particularly in Chennai you would have witnessed that after two to three bus switches, there should be a pile of bus tickets in your pocket. At times when you forget to dispose them off after the particular journey completes, it presents a lot of confusions. I would like to enumerate a few of them over here so that this conveys the message that we should dispose off the old tickets promptly to avoid confusions.

  1. Too much of pile in pockets and when you take it home the junk increases more.
  2. When a checking inspector comes in a particular journey, we would having real tough times in locating the particular ticket to show him and this intimidates him besides making us feel embarassed before other co-passengers because due to our folly, the entire bus journey time is getting wasted or unduly delayed.

I recall in my previous organization, my friend (Srinivas Sunkaraneni) always used to advise us to dispose off the bus tickets instantly since otherwise disposing in a different place creates a totally different littering problem too.

Too much of change of tickets and waste of such papers is also an environmental concern. Metropolitan Transport Corporation has brought out something like 'Day Pass', 'Weekly Pass' and 'Monthly Pass' for such frequent travels. This brings a significant savings on our personal exchequer besides demonstrating a bit of our concern for our Mother Nature too.

Workaround for Forced Sine Wave Near Guindy

Workaround for Forced Sine Wave Near Guindy

Sometime back we were discussing about a forced sine wave near guindy. Yesterday whilst commuting from Broadway to Guindy, I took the train route and hence just thought I would share the same as a good workaround. You can opt for the train by choosing any of the stations between Broadway and Guindy and after getting down at Guindy, you can negotiate the  half sine wave cross to enter into Guindy Industrial Estate to reach Ashok Pillar and beyond by catching a bus or hiring a share auto from there.

This should be much less strenous and less traffic-prone too.

An Interesting Comedy Show Staged Live in D70 at Velachery Vijayanagar Terminus Today Morning

An Interesting Comedy Show Staged Live in D70 at Velachery Vijayanagar Terminus Today Morning

Today morning when I boarded the D70 at Velachery Vijayanagar Terminus and no sooner did I caught a seat than I could start hearing some one in the seat near to the front door started to talk loudly on the phone. After the usual 'Hello', she was continuing the talk like 'Excuse me. Sorry for the disturbance'. This dialogue is a featured joke of Vadivelu when one mentally deranged person would frequently come and ask Vadivelu in this fashion and then ask him some address like 'Osama Bin Laden', 'George Bush' etc.

The joke would then go the mentally retarted person suggesting to Vadivelu that if there is no bus to America, they should hire a bicycle to go and Vadivelu would need fill petrol for the bicycle. The very brief narration of the joke would not be that effective. I would suggest one should watch Aditya or Sirippoli channel to see the joke in full. I am not interested in watching full films and hence I don't know the film where the exact joke appears.

I could not control my laughter in the bus when I heard the exact verbatim dialogue from the woman. When I was about to alight from the bus and came near the front door, that woman got another call and she again started in the same way.

The Travel-Turbulent Tuesday that made me to think futuristic and be more proactive

The Travel-Turbulent Tuesday that made me to think futuristic and be more proactive

Today seems to be an interesting Tuesday since it was my birthday. I had to visit a few relatives in Puzhuthivakkam before getting up to work in Guindy.  A travel to Puzhuthivakkam is to cover Madipakkam and you would have read about my discussion about the turbulent travel experience through Madipakkam over here. Despite these challenges and braving the inclement weather I got down near Puzhivakkam Oil Mill bus stop to get some sweets at Sri Krishna Sweets. After the quick purchase and wading through the ankle deep water near the petrol bunk there and in this confusion some important card was found missing. I had to go through some statutory procedures to block off the old card and get a new one.

I had some personal visit to Broadway near Mannady in the evening. The travel through Anna Salai during the peak hour would be hectic. I hence chose to go through the Guindy station again braving the serpentine crowds at Guindy Railway Station. After reaching Chennai Beach station and completing the tasks I chose the same route to come back to St. Thomas Mount station. I had to meet some one there and after that when I came back to the bus stand, we were thinking I needed to get a share auto only to reach back St. Thomas Mount bus stop. Interestingly a M11 (Tambaram - Saidapet) came in just for me and it dropped me near Guindy Azarkana.

The travel-turbulent Tuesday made me to be active throughout and reminded that the things should go systematic and planned besides the fact that adhoc things would cause confusions of all sorts.

Locating the Velachery Post Office ...

Locating the Velachery Post Office ...

Recently I was trying to locate a post office in Velachery for some quick registration of a parcel. Even the shopkeepers were little confused to suggest which clearly demonstrates the amount of callousness people have started to have on post offices and started migrating themselves to privately operated courier services. Somehow I managed to travel to Guindy and get my postal requirement catered to.

A few days after that when I was commuting through Velachery, I saw the freshly painted board of Velachery Post Office near Dhandeeswaram Nagar Bus Stop (near Reliance Fresh). I just thought I would share the same with other readers too. A quick search on the Internet got me the post office address in Sulekha Yellow Pages too. Check it out here.  But in the yellow pages they have mentioned it as 'Opposite Reliance Fresh' but it is actually 'Near Reliance Fresh'. I have already suggested the same to Sulekha team and they should be correcting the same shortly.

Forced Sine Curve Near Guindy (from Saidapet to Tambaram) Direction

Forced Sine Curve Near Guindy (from Saidapet to Tambaram) Direction

If you are travelling from Saidapet towards Tambaram direction with an intent to alight in Guindy Railway Station and getting across into Guindy Industrial Estate easily, you might be out-of-luck as the latest traffic pattern change introduced by Chennai City Traffic Police would mandate you to take the Race Course road, Maduvankarai bridge and enter Guindy at only MKN Road. The bus stop near Saagar Hotel has also been shifted to MKN Road.

This would include that we would now be forced to go through a forced sine curve crossing in Guindy. If you would like to avoid this circuitous route then we are being forced to shell extra bucks for an exorbitantly priced autorickshaws from the RaceCourse side.

Workaround:

  1. Alight at Asarkana rather than Guindy.
  2. Cross the road through the pedestrian zebra crossing available/subway
  3. Board the bus towards Saidapet/Parrys to alight near Guindy Indian Bank (Industrial Estate Branch)

The Bermuda Triangle near Guindy Maduvankarai

The Bermuda Triangle near Guindy Maduvankarai

The most recently constructed Maduvankarai bridge which links the four furlong road in the Velachery Checkpost direction to Adambakkam NGO Colony and Guindy junction is no doubt the best time saver since it cuts-short the distance to take to reach Guindy from Checkpost instead of taking a circuitous route through Halda, Spic etc.

However, I just noticed from different patterns of incidents that the entry point junction of the bridge from Velachery Checkpost seems to be little treacherous since MTC buses most often breakdown at this point and you would need to wait long exposed to the rain or shine at this point till the next buses come.  Two or three times, I have realised this with D70 (towards Guindy direction).

Just thought I would share this experience with other users too.
